CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âªââljââjlâââ¡ârjâ
The sound of my engine echoes in the tunnels.
âTake me past The Scar,â I request.
Sparky whistles. âWeâre getting out of here?â
I nod. Mandy can wait. The threat looming over innocent people is my main concern. Mandy still has The Circle on her side. Sheâll be okay. Anyone wonât.
âAlright,â Sparky says, hopping on his speeder. âBut you owe me lunch.â
I nod. The tunnels descend even lower than before, and itâs the most unnerving labyrinth Iâve ever been in. âHow do you keep your head straight in here?â I call to Sparky.
He shrugs. âJust do. Came through a couple times. Once you know the signs, its not so bad.â
Of course. Heâs been instrumental in leading people in and out of The Capitol. I may not be able to speak for all Duners, but Sparky definitely wasn't an accomplice to abduction.
In fact, I doubt heâd hurt a fly if he could avoid doing so.
Itâs quite the ride, and I force myself to trust Sparky knows the way. Iâm baffled by it. Iâm not sure how many twists and turns we take on the way. For all I know, weâve gone in circles.
But Sparky follows the arrows brightly painted on the walls, even a couple of them that seem to point back the way we came. I canât imagine how many Duners would fit down here on their speeders, along with Anyone in tow. Hundreds?
It would be unwise to take thousandsâ if there were even that many remaining. Theyâd lose track of them.
Finally, the ramps begin ascending and we breach daylight in a forest. I pause for a moment to take it in. We must be in the benchlands. Iâve always wanted to come here.
Sparky keeps going up a trail until he stops on a plateau. I pause beside him and marvel at how far I can see. Itâs all visible from up here. The Capitol, The Scar, even OlâRep.
My friend doesnât wait long before he barrels down the side of the mountain. I swallow hard. The trail ahead seems treacherous.
âTrust your speeder,â Sparky shouts behind him.
I take a deep breath. Faith favors the fearless, I guess.
Even with pure energy for wheels, the ride down is bumpy. The magnetism of the bike rocks unstably against the magnetism of the earth beneath me.
Itâs a quick ride down, however, and weâre at the base in no time. I pull up beside Spark Plug.
âWhere are we going?â he asks.
Without a word, I lead the way into OlâRep. Reina and I stopped at a shop in town on our way to Base Nain. She said the owner sometimes helped members of Anyone.
The woman I had met inside, however, wasnât very kind. Still, I felt as though she was my best first contact for getting the news out about the devices.
Sparky follows me into town where strangers gawk at us. Here in OlâRep, everything is vintage. Even the cars have wheels. So the two of us must seem alien.
However, even if the town was old, it still seemed better kept than some parts of Pre-Ameritus.
